About the Arrangement

I first became familiar with this lesser-known hymn by hearing the song performed by Keith and Kristyn Getty and by Buddy Greene, both on YouTube. I loved the gentle, happy sound of the tune and decided I would give arranging it a try.

I wanted my arrangement to have the same gentle and happy feel that I enjoyed in Buddy Greene's and the Gettys' recordings, but I also added a unique feel with some extra syncopation, giving it a steady flowing sound. Doing this and adding some grace notes to the harmonies in the right hand helped the melody (especially in the chorus) to soar and sing, matching the lyrics and tune as they lift in the chorus and cause us to turn our attention heavenward to God, who holds us firmly in every trial:

No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I’m clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heav’n and earth,
how can I keep from singing?

The lyrics of this chorus remind me of an encouraging quote by Charles H. Spurgeon: "I have learned to kiss the waves that throw me up against the Rock of Ages."
