Often when we think of hymn writers, we tend to think of the lyricists of hymns, as the lyrics make a great impact on our lives. However, without the authors of their tunes, we might never come to know the lyrics we cherish so much. Though he wrote some of his own lyrics, William J. Kirkpatrick often authored tunes to lyrics which were penned by others (such as Fanny Crosby) that have become some of our most popular hymns.
William J. Kirkpatrick was born in 1838 to Thomas and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick. There is debate as to whether he was born in Ireland or Pennsylvania, but either way he spent most of his life in the state of Pennsylvania. He played several instruments in his childhood and loved to study music. When he was around 17 years old he joined a local Methodist church and served in the choir, often playing violin and cello, and in 1861 he spent a year in the army during the Civil War as a Fife Major. Also in 1861, Kirkpatrick married Susanna J. Doak, with whom he had three children.
Kirkpatrick published many collections of hymns throughout his life and his first composition was published in 1858. At first, he could not support his family on the income from his publications and music, so he used his carpentry skills in the furniture business to raise them. It wasn't until Susanna died in 1878 that he quit the furniture business and worked solely on music.
Kirkpatrick continued to write and publish hymns until his death in 1921. It is said that the lyrics to his last tune, which he was found to be writing when he passed away, were:
Just as Thou wilt, Lord, this is my cry.
Just as Thou wilt, to live or die.
I am Thy servant, Thou knowest best,
Just as Thou wilt Lord, labor or rest.
These final words of William J. Kirkpatrick serve as a testimony to us all. Whatever may come our way in life, whether success or trial, life or death, the Lord knows best and we must trust Him in all circumstances. Kirkpatrick believed this and submitted his life to the will of His Savior. May we all do the same!
